Chengde is best known as the home of the Imperial Mountain Resort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the emperors of China would go to enjoy cooler weather in the summer, and the Eight Outer Temples (also known as the Lesser Potala Palace), which were modeled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Located 140 miles (230km) northeast of Beijing, this interesting and historical city has built a very nice riverwalk alongside the river that runs through the main part of the city. Chengde is a bit off the beaten path for most visitors to China and it provides a nice alternative to the overcrowded, touristy sites of nearby Beijing. Other must-see sites in Xi'an are the Bell and Drum Towers, the Sha'anxi Provincial History Museum and one of the world's most intact city walls - you can actually rent bicycles and ride all the way around the old city of Xi'an on top of the ancient city wall.
